Brighton 10, Carthage 6
Brighton defeated Section III's Carthage, 10-6, in this morning's Class B state tournament semifinals to earn a spot in Saturday's title match against a familiar rival.
The Barons (19-1) will face downstate rival and two-time defending champion Garden City (20-1) in tomorrow's 9:30 a.m. championship at State University College at Cortland. Garden City beat Section II's Niskayuna, 17-4, in today's other semifinal.
It's the fourth time Brighton, ranked second in the state, and No. 1 Garden City will square off.
Brighton beat the Section VIII champions, 11-8, in the 2005 title game for its only crown, but lost the 2006 championship, 8-4. Garden City won last year's semifinal, 6-2.
Senior Rachel Ballatori (three goals), junior Brenna Bauer (three) and senior Rachel DerCola (two goals, three assists) led the Barons today. Their zone defense, led by junior Liz Ryan and freshman Grace Hilling, also stifled Kate Ferris, the top-scorer for Carthage (18-4).
Brighton led 7-3 at halftime. Carthage scored first in the second half, but goals by Brighton's Megan Cregan and two by Bauer put the Barons ahead 10-4 and on their way to the championship game.

Skaneatekes-III 16, Honeoye Falls-Lima 8
Honeoye Falls-Lima's first trip to the girls state lacrosse semifinals didn't turn out as the Cougars hoped.

The first-time Section V champions lost 16-8 to Section III's Skaneateles this afternoon at the State University College at Cortland. The Lakers (19-5) will face defending champion Shoreham-Wading River of Section XI at noon on tomorrow in a rematch of last year's title game.

Jill Maier's goal six minutes into the game tied it at 2 for HF-L (14-7), but the Cougars went the next 17 minutes, 41 seconds without scoring as Skaneateles, which won states in 2005 and 2006, built an 8-2 lead.

Anna Legret's goal off a breakaway broke the HF-L drought with 1:19 left in the half. Skaneateles scored with 26 seconds to go, but the Cougars gained some momentum when their top-scorer, Amanda Willison, scored her first goal off a free-position shot with just four seconds to go.
Skaneateles outscored HF-L 4-1 over the first six minutes of the second half to take a commanding 13-5 lead, but the Cougars tried to come back. Willison and sophomore Lindsay Powell scored to cut the deficit to six goals with 13½ minutes left.

The Lakers then started to chew time off the clock with deliberate play. Willison scored her third goal off a feed from Powell with 5:10 left to make it 13-8, but Skaneateles won the draw and Shannon Tierney scored for the Lakers with 3:13 remaining and HF-L was just about out of time.
